Shanghai Diesel Engine Co., Ltd. (Shangchai Company) was formerly known as Shanghai Diesel Engine Factory. It was founded in April 1947. It was originally named Wusong Manufacturing Factory of China Agricultural Machinery Company. It has trial-produced and produced a 5-horsepower gasoline engine. After the founding of New China, it was renamed Wusong Machinery Factory, and once mass-produced single-cylinder horizontal 750-rpm 12-horsepower diesel engine. In August 1953, it was officially named Shanghai Diesel Engine Factory and began to design and manufacture diesel engines by itself. In 1958, the first self-designed and fully domestically produced 6135 diesel engine was born here, setting a precedent for the manufacturing of medium-power high-speed diesel engines in China. In 1964, the 6135 diesel engine was equipped with the first domestic T120 bulldozer and passed the entire machine identification. In 1969, it successfully equipped the first domestic ZL40 loader, establishing Shangchai Company's position as the main power supplier in the domestic engineering machinery industry. In 1993, it was restructured into a joint-stock listed company. At the time of the restructuring, the registered capital was 480 million yuan and the total assets were 2.3 billion yuan. At present, Shangchai Company has become a national super-large high-tech enterprise integrating development, design, manufacturing and marketing. Its business scope involves diesel engines, fuel systems, diesel generator sets and investment enterprises.

The company mainly produces diesel engines, natural gas engines, dimethyl ether engines and hybrid power for trucks, buses, construction machinery, agricultural, ships, generator sets.
