Brand Introduction

Gretsch Drums is a subsidiary of American musical instrument manufacturer Gretsch. Gretsch was founded in 1883 by 27-year-old German immigrant Friedrich Gretsch in Brooklyn, New York; shortly after Friedrich Gretsch arrived in the United States, he began to produce banjos, hand drums and drums until his death in 1895. In 1916, his son Fred Gretsch Sr. moved the factory to a larger factory, and Gretsch became a large manufacturer of musical instruments in the United States, with its main products including electric guitar and acoustic guitar, bass, four-string guitar, drum set, etc.

Both guitar and drums were produced at 60 Broadway Street until the mid-1960s, when drum production was merged at 109 South 5th Street, allowing for the expansion of guitar production. Fred Gretsch Jr. operated the company until 1967 when Gretsch sold to Baldwin Piano Co. Baldwin transferred Gretsch's instrument manufacturing business from Brooklyn, New York to a factory in DeQueen, Arkansas in mid-1969.

In 1985, Fred W. Gretsch, a member of the Gretsch family, bought back Fret W. Gretsch, the son of William "Bill" Gretsch and great-grandson of the founder of the company. At that time, the drums produced were transferred to Richland, South Carolina, and remain there to this day. In 2000, Gretsch signed an agreement with Kaman Music to grant them the rights to make Gretsch USA Custom and Signature drums. They also purchased most of the equipment used to make Gretsch drums.

In January 2015, the Lombardi family announced that Drum Workshop had become a manufacturer and global distributor of Gretsch Drums. The Ridgeland plant will continue to operate, while Gretsch Family remains the owner of the company. In 2017, Hal Leonard joined the Gretsch Drum Team as the U.S. agent for the Renow, Catalina and Energy series of drums. To this day, Grech's Custom & Signature series drums continue to be made in Richland, South Carolina.

Gretsch has three main production locations, including the United States, Taiwan and mainland China. All models are arranged as: USA Custom, Signature Sets, New Classic, Renow Maple, Renow Purewood Bubinga, Catalina Maple, Catalina Ash, Catalina CLUB, and Blackhawk.
