In 1880, Tinius Olsen, an engineer who immigrated from Norway to Philadelphia but was just unemployed, invented the well-known "little giant" and applied for a patent, finally having a device that can perform tensile, lateral bending and compression tests at the same time. Olsen's equipment became the ancestor of the test machines produced worldwide later, and the company created by Olsen to promote its invention has also survived in the test machine industry to this day. Mr. Olsen retired from the company in 1929 and died in 1933. The company he founded in 1880 has been in operation for more than 140 years and is still operated by its descendants.
