Inspired by his entrepreneurial spirit, Kaspar Winkler laid the first cornerstone of Sika in 1910. He was born into an ordinary family of cobblers and immigrated from Australia to Switzerland at a very young age. In Switzerland, he invented Sika-1, a mortar waterproofing preparation. The product was later used for waterproofing in the San Gotthar Tunnel, which enabled it to be electrified.
Create and meet demand! Kaspar Winkler realized the global demand for this new waterproofing agent and began to set up subsidiaries around the world. As early as the 1930s, Sica had opened 15 subsidiaries in Europe, the United States, Argentina, Brazil and Japan to open up new construction chemistry markets.
Now the new Saint Gotthar Tunnel has become an important project in Sika. Although Sika-1 is still in our product range, more and more advanced products are being used. Building this 57km-long tunnel across the Alps requires high-tech jet cement admixtures and a customized waterproofing system.
