Linksys is a Belkin-owned department that sells home and small business network products, mainly engaged in broadband and wireless routers.
Linksys was originally founded in 1988 and was acquired by Cisco in 2003. Although Linksys is more well-known for its broadband and wireless routers, it also produces Ethernet switching and VoIP devices and a variety of other products.
The more well-known product produced by Linksys is WRT54G. In order to reduce costs, Linksys decided to use firmware based on Linux operating system. Consumer-grade routers include a central processing unit and operating system, and most functions are implemented through software encoding to keep physical hardware to a minimum to save production costs; however, consumer-grade routers are known to rely on software to provide functionality. Unreliable, software-based routers that are not equipped with fast processors may be slow when pointing to network traffic. The WRT54G is well-known for its fast processor, but its firmware is incomplete and lacks high-end features.
