LATICRETE has been leading the construction market by manufacturing innovative building materials. After three generations of efforts, the customer-centric family-owned business provides materials to more than 100 countries for manufacturers worldwide.
All this started in a basement in New Haven, Connecticut, where one of the innovators was Dr. Henry M. Rothberg.
In the late 1940s, Dr. Henry M. Rothberg, a young chemical engineer, realized while working in the family floor installation business in South Carolina that there had to be a better method of tile installation than the traditional “full mortar bed” approach. He decided to work on alternative ways to install tiles and stone to improve the chemical composition of ordinary Portland cement tiles and stone installation systems.
Dr. Rothberg started the development of Uniroyal Chemical at the research institute in Nogtak, Connecticut, where he studied synthetic latex technologies applied to the concrete industry. After a lot of effort and time, LATICRETE® 4237 latex thin additives have been developed and brought to the market. This is the first time that a solid, weather-resistant and earthquake-resistant "thin layer" of mortar can be mixed on site using equal amounts of sand and cement and measured to a feasible consistency with LATICRETE 4237. In 1956, it was not realized that it would soon prove to be a revolutionary product; Uniroyal sold the LATICRETE brand to Dr. Rothberg, LATICRETE International, Inc., which was born.
