More than 30 years ago, Lansinoh was founded in Portland, Oregon, by a breastfeeding mom, Ms. Resheda Hagen, and was registered as Lansinoh Company in 1978. At that time, Ms. Resheda's first child had just been born and she chose to breastfeed, but after a few days her nipples developed from mild to extreme pain. Since the existing products at that time failed to help her relieve the pain, she began to hesitate whether to wean her. A head of the International Breast Milk Association encouraged her to continue trying to breastfeed and recommended lanolin, but there was no store selling lanolin at the time.
Ms. Resheda's husband, a doctor, found a can of about a pound of lanolin from the hospital pharmacy and took it home. Ms. Resheda immediately felt the pain relieved after applying lanolin to the painful nipples. Over the next few days, her nipples healed and continued to breastfeed successfully. Then she began to promote the benefits that breastfeeding mothers can get by using “pure lanolin” as a treatment for nipple pain.
