The predecessor of JTEKT is Koyo, founded in 1921 and Toyota Machinery (TOYODA) founded in 1941.
Koyo was founded in 1921 and was founded by Soichiro Ikeda. In 1935, Koyo Seiko Co., Ltd. was reorganized into "Koyo Seiko Co., Ltd.". Based on the production of bearings called "industry rice", it has developed into a famous bearing manufacturer after decades of development. In the 1960s, Koyo began to develop and produce parts such as automotive steering gears. In 1988, it successfully developed the electric power steering gear (EPS) and achieved mass production. It was equipped with Suzuki microcar Cervo, and since then it has been started. Cars are moving to a new era of using electric power.
Toyota Machinery (TOYODA) was formerly the machine tool department of Toyota Motor. In 1941, it became an independent company with customers all over the world. In addition to industrial machine tools, Toyota Machinery is also engaged in the production and sales of automobile steering gear and drive components, and the industrial field is extensive and in-depth. In 1998, it began to produce electronic control four-wheel drive chain ITCC, and in 2003, it acquired Bosch Automotive's TORSEN business unit and began to produce TORSEN differentials.
Since Koyo and Toyota Engineer (TOYODA) merged in January 2006 to create the new "JTEKT", it has adhered to the principle of "rewarding the trust of giving back to society through product production and for people.
