Hongfutang was founded in 1885. It was founded by Chinese Zhu Hongfu, whose courtesy name is Peizhi. It was founded in Penang, Malaysia (approved as a World Cultural Heritage List by the World Heritage Committee in 2008). It is famous in Southeast Asia for its distribution of Nanyang bird's nest and Chinese medicinal materials. It is known as the "Nanyang Imperial Swallow House".
Zhu Hongfu's ancestors came from Fujian, China and were one of the army that followed Zheng He to the West in 1405 AD. The main personnel who followed Zheng He to the West were sailors, officers and soldiers, procurement, craftsmen, doctors, translators, etc. Among them, every 150 crew members were assigned a medical staff, and his ancestors were the traditional Chinese medicine doctors on one of the ships. At that time, due to the harsh sea climate and environment, his ancestors unfortunately fell seriously ill when they arrived in Malacca and were dying. According to the navigation rules, in order to prevent the disease from spreading, patients must get off the boat and live on their own. His ancestors had to stay in Malacca. Fortunately, he was discovered by local indigenous people. The indigenous people used the locally unique body-strengthening supplement - bird's nest for him to eat. In addition, he was a famous doctor and knew how to diagnose and treat. After a period of careful treatment, his ancestors miraculously survived. Therefore, his ancestors reproduced and thrived in the local area. While practicing medicine, they introduced local specialty bird's nest and many foreign medicinal materials, such as rhino horns, antelope horns, lilacs, myrrh, etc. to China, and introduced many Chinese medicinal materials such as Dendrobium and Cordyceps sinensis to Malaysia.
